Book review: O'Reilly short cuts - Introduction to Flex 2

by kai on 03/11/2007

O'Reilly has a series of so called "Short Cuts", PDF e-books that introduce new technologies or major updates of those in a brief, compact way. Introduction to Flex 2.0 by Roger Braunstein is such a "Short Cuts" title and comprises 88 pages full of valuable information for the upcoming Flex developer :) The author bascially starts explaining the basic concepts of Flex 2, the relationship between…

Unit testing with Flex

by kai on 03/11/2007

I'm currently working through my inbox and find all those interesting stuff I've thought "I need to blog about that"...:)

Here's another one: Prayank has presented on unit testing with Flex and FlexUnit. It's already a while ago but still available, have a look! Sourcecode download is here.

JRunConfig Errorurl

by kai on 03/11/2007

I've come across that because a customer of mine wanted to have a nice error page displayed in case of having to restart ColdFusion or any other woe with the underlying JRun.

You can configure that particular type of error page in the HTTP server connector and it's fairly straight forward for Apache as it's just one line of the connector configuration module in httpd.conf:

Leopard and the broken FileReference in Flash Player

by kai on 02/11/2007

With the update to Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard), a lot of people reported issues with using the FileReference in the FlashPlayer (i.e. uploading/downloading files). Emmy Huang, who's Product Manager for the FlashPlayer, has just posted that the "Moviestar" beta update for Mac that's on Adobe Labs has been bumped up to version 9.0.98.0 and that it contains a fix/workaround for the FileReference issue. Be warned, this wouldn't be a final release, but at least it gives us a reasonable workaround.

Installing CF8 on Debian Etch

by marcus on 02/11/2007

Yesterday evening, I needed to set up a CF8 development environment in VMWare. Honestly - this was the first install (and believe me, I installed a LOT of CF servers in my career) that really worked like a charm - good work, Adobe! If you ever set up a CF 5/6/7 server, you know about the common problems such as non-working apache connectors, Installers that refuse to execute and so on - all that…

OMG: The "Mega Business Byte" deal at the Duxton hotel in Auckland

by kai on 02/11/2007

Diane and I will go up to Auckland in pretty much exactly three weeks to attend the Muse concert up there. We've booked the flights a while ago but usually don't bother booking hotels until closer to the day (wotif.com has excellent offers). That's the prelude to the following story. I just went to wotif.com and had a quick look for that particular day (we're just up there for one night) and…

German CFUG: Hidden Gems in CF8 and Coldspring

by kai on 02/11/2007

Charlie Arehart presented "Hidden Gems in CF 8" for the German CFUG a few weeks ago. I can really recommend this preso to anyone who is either looking into buying/upgrading to CF 8 or even already using it. The recording is available online. While I was looking at the German cfug.de site, I came across another set of slides that might be interesting for at least some of you. Harry Klein of…

Flex Builder 2 edu for free and Flex Builder 2/3 pricing

by kai on 02/11/2007

You've probably heard of the upcoming free Flex Builder 2 for educational institutions and students. Very cool and that hopefully gives the Flex market another boom.

Also - Prayank has just recently blogged about the next general Flex Builder 2 and 3 pricing, very interesting to read and a good pricing model (as I would think).

Where does ColdFusion "sit"?

by kai on 02/11/2007

Answer: it's the "hub" - I really like Tim's visualization of ColdFusion's positioning in the centre of the IT infrastructure! Very nice, and I hope as many people as possible grab this interpretation and use it in their efforts to establish CF in their organisation!

And while we're speaking of Tim Buntel: Andrew Muller did an interview with Tim during MAX, it's online on BuilderAU.
