by kai on 22/01/2006

A good friend of mine is looking for a a few CF freelancers/contractors willing to work in the state of North-Rhine-Westfalia, Germany to work in client projects for a pretty well-known agency.

Knowledge in other technologies (PHP, Java) might help, but is not required. If you are interested in getting the details, drop me an email and I'll get you in touch with him.

CFDocument just showing binary dump

by kai on 17/01/2006

Got a strange issue today. I was running a page with a very simple CFDOCUMENT tag and had a typo in the tag - so ended up with a syntax error. Fixed the error and I got the whole document as a binary dump within the browser window (IE), it didn't make any difference if it was pdf or FlashPaper. But: worked fine in Firefox. Very strange, I checked if the system was on CF 7.0.1, if all hotfixes…

Alternative CF engines

by kai on 02/01/2006

Yesterday I've had a chat with AgentM and we were talking about IgniteFusion (which I honestly never dealt with before). With that, I've had a look around the web and my email inbox and decided to compile a brief overview: 1. Blue Dragon 2. IgniteFusion 3. Coral WebBuilder 4. Railo BlueDragon is obviously the most famous one. I've heard a lot of good stuff about IgniteFusion and Railo from…

How to convince people of CFEclipse

by kai on 08/09/2005

Some people asked me how I convinced the guys mentioned in this post to switch over to Eclipse. It was not that hard, let me quickly explain why: 1. Both don't like Dreamweaver as a coding tool, so both were on Homesite+ 2. Both were annoyed that Homesite+ doesn't support all the cool features of CFMX 6.0, 6.1 and 7 (well, there's syntax highlighting and help...but that's it) This alone made a…

Conversion to CFEclipse

by kai on 08/09/2005

Converted two more people in the office today to kick away CFStudio or Homesite and to work with Eclipse 3.1, CFEclipse 1.2, Quantum DB and the Eclipse web standard tools. Took them 2-3 hours to get used to it but now they're pretty happy. The only flaw they're moaning about is that the editor doesn't have a proper line wrap. But anyway...

Wanted: Pre-selected tree node in Flash forms CFTREE

by kai on 07/09/2005

I'm going mad with this. Do you know this situation - you wanna do something very simple and it turns out to be the most ugly and head-banging issue for a while... For me it's how to preselect a tree node in a Flash forms CFTREE. It doesn't seem to be possible with the "offical" tag attributes, but who cares. The Flash forms offer so many ways to tweak their behaviour, but I really got bloodily…

Visualization of Amdahls Law in Flex

by kai on 28/08/2005

Tonight, I've been slightly bored by no friends available, wife off for work over the weekend, lousy TV programme and dumb weather ;) So, following my last post on why CF developers should care about Java stuff, I built a simple Flex app to visualize Amdahls Law. Here's a screenshot, I just have to make it pretty and put in onto my Flex machine (I'm running the non-commercial edition). Well, I've…

Java (and CF) garbage collection: Why should you care?

by kai on 27/08/2005

Just recently I was asked why one should care about JVM tuning, garbage collection and other "very low-level settings" (the latter from the point of view of the average CF developer). I mean, I'm talking and writing about that pretty often... so - a reasonable question. Let me give you an example with figures... Let's assume we're talking about a Java application using Javas internal garbage…

CFMX 7 Developer Certification

by kai on 26/07/2005

Jippie, just passed the CFMX 7 Developer Certification with 92%. This means I passed on the Advanced level again.

While preparing, I wondered how the new exam with all the new CF7 stuff would be like. Well, too bad one is not to talk about the content and the questions after doing the exam, but let's say from my point of view the exam became more "appropriate" to what I expect from a test like this one, whatever that might mean ;-)
