by kai on 24/03/2008

Not sure if everybody out there came across that one yet. Adobe has published an ActionScript 3 Reference Guide booklet. Very nice and handy, pdf is available on Developer Center - the printed version will be distributed on various events in the future.

"Active content" developers - watch out

by kai on 22/11/2007

Adobe has updated their active content developer centre (which was basically introduced in preparation of the MSFT/IE patent issue with Eolas). There are a few changes and alterations how active content is going to be interpreted in future IE releases, so make sure you have a read.

O'Reilly has a series of so called "Short Cuts", PDF e-books that introduce new technologies or major updates of those in a brief, compact way. Leopard and the broken FileReference in Flash Player

by kai on 02/11/2007

With the update to Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard), a lot of people reported issues with using the FileReference in the FlashPlayer (i.e. uploading/downloading files). Emmy Huang, who's Product Manager for the FlashPlayer, has just posted that the "Moviestar" beta update for Mac that's on Adobe Labs has been bumped up to version 9.0.98.0 and that it contains a fix/workaround for the FileReference issue. Be warned, this wouldn't be a final release, but at least it gives us a reasonable workaround.

Flex Builder 2 edu for free and Flex Builder 2/3 pricing

by kai on 02/11/2007

You've probably heard of the upcoming free Flex Builder 2 for educational institutions and students. Very cool and that hopefully gives the Flex market another boom.

Also - Prayank has just recently blogged about the next general Flex Builder 2 and 3 pricing, very interesting to read and a good pricing model (as I would think).

Buzzword Preso

by kai on 02/11/2007

I assume everyone has heard of Buzzword, right? Oh, you haven't? Buzzword is an astonishingly good online text processor and Adobe has just recently bought Virtual Ubiquity, the people who have built Buzzword.

Just the other day there was a highly interesting Connect presentation for Adobe User Group Managers on Buzzword that I'd love to share with you guys. Have fun watching it!

Oh, btw: Diane has blogged about Buzzword as well, have a read!

Apply to be part of the Pacifica beta

by kai on 25/10/2007

Pacifica is the codename of a new hosted service from Adobe. Its target is to provide a high quality VoIP service layer for the Flash Platform (with Flash, Flex, AIR etc). I've seen some demos of Pacifica at MAX Chicago the other week and it's pretty powerful and impressive - it took me a while to see the potential though :) Pacifica is now available as a private beta and people who are…

C/C++ to ActionScript

by kai on 23/10/2007

One of my personal technical highlights of MAX 2007 was the Scott Petersen's sneak peek about potential ways of converting existing C and C++ code to AS code and to re-use it for Flash platform based apps.

There's a very good video online in Peter Elst's blog and Ryan Stewart interviewed Scott about some of the technical details. This is worth a read guys!

Aral Balkan explains SWX

by kai on 05/10/2007

During one of the MAX breakfast, I was having a chat with Aral Balkan about his open-source project SWX. SWX is a native data format for Flash player-based RIAs and it looks great. It currently supports the .swf format for up to version 8 and Aral is working on providing support for the new Virtual Machine used from FP 9 on.
