CFML - alive and kicking at CFCamp and CFAcademy in Germany

by kai on 06/08/2012

Quite often one is told that ColdFusion is dead, old and proprietary. That's actually not quite true even though I can see where people are coming from - ColdFusion doesn't seem to be as posh and fancy as the poster children of web development such as Rails and Node. Fair enough. However, there's more to CFML than just only Adobe ColdFusion. A lot of people don't even know that there are two well…

Direct Download Links for (older versions of) Adobe ColdFusion and others

by kai on 06/08/2012

I just figured it'd be a good idea to create a quick blog post about how to find and download older versions of Adobe software. I got inspired by Robin Hilliard asking for a Solaris installer for ColdFusion 8 the other day on the cfaussie mailing list. He got lucky and Richard Turner-Jones from Adobe AU managed to get him an installer from an internal Adobe server, but what could average Joe…

Hail the AHT (Apple Hardware Test)

by kai on 28/02/2012

Yesterday afternoon I all of a sudden started to get GSODs (Grey Screen Of Death) - the equivalent of the Windows Blue Screen of Death. Not good - actually those were my first serious crashes on this particular machine ever (which is about 2.5 years old). I went through the usual diagnostics, OSX permissions and repair, fsck from single-user mode etc. but nothing helped. One thing I noticed…

Extending Adobe LiveCycle through custom DSCs - some resources

by kai on 25/02/2012

Don't worry - this is not going to be a lengthy, complicated, super-advanced tutorial. I thought about writing a post on Adobe LC DSCs for a while, but never got round to. Today, I got kind of pushed over the edge by seeing that my friend Duane and his partner Matt from Überity have published a super-simple DSC to integrate an LC process with the Twilio SMS/TXT services. You have no idea what I'm…

Thoughts on the MMP threshold in New Zealand

by kai on 25/02/2012

Note: This is a political post. It's highly driven by my political opinions and the ongoing discussion on the preferred NZ election system. If you don't like to read about these topics, please move on. I was inspired to write this one up after reading a blog post of stuff by David Farrar. I don't share his political opinion, but he's asking a very valid question: "Why should the MMP threshold in…

Yeah, why not. I had a bit of a busy week and didn't get to taking photos every day - and in particular to uploading them. Here's a collection: Day 13: It's webstock week - this is my bag Day 14: I'm prototyping - in a webstock workshop Day 15: ehhh... missing Day 16: oups, still missing Day 17: Off to the Naki - no Vodafone reception, so I needed to find out the number of my Telecom XT…

Lack of password security at Telecom NZ?

by kai on 12/02/2012

I had to change the password for Telecom NZ's "mbbmeter" application for a prepaid data SIM card the other day. I wanted to create and set a secure password, some mix of latin characters, numbers and special characters. Look at the screenshot below: It didn't let me. It didn't allow "symbols" - which means: special characters such as ! ; , & $ . etc. It's actually a shame because these types of…

Foto Feb: day 12

I went flying this morning. While I was at it, I did a rating for the PA28-161 in ZK-MBG - the newest addition to the Wellington Aero Club's fleet. Took me 2.8 hrs and was lots of fun - first time ever I experienced and practiced a Max Rate Turn. We also nearly had a bird strike on one of the takeoffs from NZWN at about 400ft altitude. The photo is a bit cheeky. I forgot to take a photo of the…
