My Photoshop lesson of the day: PMS colors

by kai on 18/10/2007

Yikes. For a particular reason, a printing company has asked me to provide them with the PMS colors of a particular graphic. Great - with me being design challenged and barely able to explain the concepts behind RGB and CMYK...:) Don't even start with the tricky questions of "their" world :) I finally figured out that PMS is a standard in the printing world which makes a lot of sense as you…

Lynda or Total Training?

by kai on 17/10/2007

I'm currently looking into getting a subscription for one of the large online training services, Lynda.com or Total Training.

I've looked into both, tried out a few things, but it's really hard to finally make up my mind. I also own DVDs from both companies and actually think they're both doing a reasonably good job.

Any opinions or suggestions what to get? No, "subscribe to both" is not a valid answer, sorry :)

Retro gaming again: M.U.L.E.

by kai on 17/10/2007

Not sure how I exactly found it the other day, but somehow I've ended up looking for one of my all time favourite computer games: M.U.L.E. I was thrilled to find that there is a page named World of M.U.L.E. - but even better - you can play M.U.L.E. online on with 4 players via the net using some combination of Atari emulator kits. You'd have to run it on Windows though, but well - a small price…

Follow The Great Whale Trail

by kai on 17/10/2007

My political message of the day is to mention Greenpeace's Great Whale Trail. They've tagged humpback whales in New Caledonia and the Cook Islands and you can trace their movements on Google Maps. Obviously this campaign has a political motivation as well - to fight whaling!

Cheat sheets

by kai on 17/10/2007

My colleague Simon Pithers has digged out a nice source for cheat sheets - you know those nice A4 printouts that contain the most important information on syntax, semantics or keyboard shortcuts on a particular technology, product or game. I found the CSS one to be really handy. Talking about cheat sheets and giving the post at least a bit of a push towards being related to Adobe technology: Flex…

Symbian s60 - new stuff

by kai on 16/10/2007

Three more interesting things I've come across today in regards to my s60-based Nokia n93 phone: - Google Maps is now available as a native version on s60 phones - that's handy for people who have a data plan with sufficient volume to look up maps online. You can get the install directly on your s60 phone by going to www.google.com/gmm in the phone's browser. - SIC FTP client is a free FTP client…

You want to learn Finnish - do it with Flash Lite

by kai on 16/10/2007

Flash Finnish v1.0: This one caught my particular interest because I used to learn Finnish...back in the days... :) Flash Finnish is a very nice vocabulary software for your mobile phone which needs to run Flash Lite 2.0 or higher. I case you wonder why a German guy living in New Zealand used to learn Finnish... the language is highly logical and grammar-focussed - so it appealed to me more than…
