How Maths and Computer Science gave me something to do

by kai on 04/08/2013

The other day, my friend Sam McEwan published a post "How computer science saved my ass" on his blog. In this post, he explained how he ended up doing computer science and elaborated on both the good and the bad parts of his university (and in general overall schooling) experience. When I read Sam's blog post, I immediately thought: "Wow, I had a very different experience" and I wondered if it…

And then there was Webstock 2013 (day 1)

by kai on 18/02/2013

I spent Thursday and Friday of last week at the awesome Webstock conference. I'm not gonna go into all the details of what it is, why it's so awesome and why it sells out before they even put the programme together (I got asked the latter by a friend of mine who couldn't believe the fact that there was no programme until 2 weeks ago or so and that the conference still sold out). Instead, I'm…

Time travel

by kai on 13/01/2013

About 10 years ago, Diane and I went to Australia for the first time ever. There will probably be a special blog post to celebrate the occasion at some stage in February. Today I just got reminded of the trip because an "anonymous friend" of mine sent me this: Now go back in time to that elevator in King's Cross and say: "one day in 10 years time, when Diane and I are living in New Zealand,…

by kai on 07/08/2012

Just a quick update that both Wellington-based (this is Wellington in New Zealand, in case anyone wonders) Adobe meetups have now finally moved away from the Adobe groups site and various Google groups (the old Flex/Flash Platform Group) and are now consolidated on meetup.com: Creative Suite User Group Wellington and Wellington Adobe Web Technology Meetup The main reason why we moved off Adobe…

Thoughts on the MMP threshold in New Zealand

by kai on 25/02/2012

Note: This is a political post. It's highly driven by my political opinions and the ongoing discussion on the preferred NZ election system. If you don't like to read about these topics, please move on. I was inspired to write this one up after reading a blog post of stuff by David Farrar. I don't share his political opinion, but he's asking a very valid question: "Why should the MMP threshold in…

Lack of password security at Telecom NZ?

by kai on 12/02/2012

I had to change the password for Telecom NZ's "mbbmeter" application for a prepaid data SIM card the other day. I wanted to create and set a secure password, some mix of latin characters, numbers and special characters. Look at the screenshot below: It didn't let me. It didn't allow "symbols" - which means: special characters such as ! ; , & $ . etc. It's actually a shame because these types of…

Printing from Wine on OS X

by kai on 15/01/2012

The flight planning software I use is Windows-based and unfortunately Windows-only. It's a really powerful tool and there's nothing comparable for OS X (at least not for Australia and New Zealand), so I'm happy to go the extra mile making it work. The easiest way would obviously be to install the software in a virtual machine and to run just Windows in such a VM with VMWare Fusion or Parallels.…

Why would anyone travel from New Zealand to Kansas City, MO? D2WC!

by kai on 08/01/2012

The short answer is: for D2WC 2012. Let me briefly explain: D2WC is a conference about and for designers, developers, hybrid and the famous designer-developer workflow. It will go into its third iteration in 2012 and after Dee Sadler was originally trying to get me involved with the event already in 2010, I finally went in 2011 and had a great time over there (you can find my 2011 talk on…

Creative Suite CS 5.5 doesn't activate?

by kai on 19/12/2011

Yes, I know - this is the first post in this blog since ... more than a year. Oups! Demanded by Terry Ryan, this is a blog post about a terrible Adobe support experience and the solution to a problem that happened to me a few week ago (Well, Terry only asked me to blog the solution - but I think it's fair to also tell the support story here) All of a sudden my Creative Suite CS 5.5 license on my…
