MAX 2005: Night event

by kai on 19/10/2005

Yesterday's night event really was a blast. Macromedia rented one area of Disney's Califormia Adventure Park and provided lots of food and drinks before taking the coasters, wheels and all the other rides. This particular area of the theme park was shaped up like an old waterfront peer of the 1920's, so it used to be an awesome setting for a special event. The night ended over there in the hotel…

MAX 2005 coverage: Flex 2.0 3-hours session ;)

by kai on 19/10/2005

The order of session reporting got messed up a bit as I didn't make it to blog properly yesterday. I've been to a pretty good session on Flex 2.0, held by various people of the Flex 2.0 team. They provided a pretty complete overview of all the new features, changes and additional functionality in 2.0. It was way too much stuff to really jot it down, but believe me that Flex 2.0 is going to be a…

MAX 2005 coverage: sneak peaks

by kai on 19/10/2005

This is always one of the best sessions of the whole conference. Developers, engineers and people from behind the curtain show products and ideas from the MM labs... The sneak peak session was held in a pretty Aussie style. Opened by our host, "the cousin of Steve Erwin" - Paul the code hunter - all is about hunting crocodiles and snakes ;) Captivate: - Scenario simulation wizard for e-Learning -…

MAX 2005 coverage: Bof - Java and CF integration war stories

by kai on 18/10/2005

This was pretty interesting, Sean Corfield invited to attend a birds of a feather session on Java and CF integration and a bunch of people showed up to share their experiences.

It's amazing what some people are doing with CF and Java, from decompiling the CF core classes to find issues up to complex cluster setups and other stuff. Tom Jordahl joined the session as well and ended up with a wishlist of further extensions of the integration possibilities ;)

MAX 2005 coverage: The Flash Player Runtime Security Model

by kai on 18/10/2005

Ever asked yourself what might be potential security hazards for your Rich Internet Apps? I've been to a pretty good session about that topic.

Themes covered were:

- The FP security model and permissions
- Sandboxing and default permissions
- Local and remote concepts
- mms.cfg
- Application of the theory in the real world (client and server)
- SSL and stuff etc.

Good session, got a lot of information from it!

MAX 2005 coverage: Optimizing Flex apps for performance and scalability

by kai on 17/10/2005

This session seems to be very interesting. David showed some performance tests with Flex 1.5 and FP 7 vs. Flex 2.0 alpha and FP 8.5 and the speed is dramatically increased. Some more hints: * Object initialization - deferred instantiation - think about the use of objects and when to create an object - use mx:Repeater carefully (do you really need all the objects created inside of a repeater -…

MAX 2005 coverage: Frameworks for Flex

by kai on 17/10/2005

The conference has started. The big improvement over last years conference is that wifi seems to work smoothly in the session rooms ;) I'm sitting in a talk called "Frameworks for Flex", held by Steven and Allistair of Macromedia Consulting EMEA, the former iteration two until the got acquired by MM quite recently. Steven was pointing out that the term "framework" was totally overused. There were…

Macromedia Labs went live today. Right now, there is the Flex 2 alpha available for download but as far as we were told, there is more stuff to come. All you need is a Macromedia web site ID which is free.

More about labs here.

We're in Anaheim...

by kai on 16/10/2005

Finally we've made it to Anaheim to attend the MAX 2005 conference. We had flown into LAX yesterday (Friday) afternoon and spent the night with Todd and Jared eating salad, garlic bread, pizza and a bloody big bowl of tiramisu.

Today we've been to Disney's Magic Kingdom, which is right across the street from our hotel and the convention center. I'll post some pics later or tomorrow. By the way, if anyone wants to touch base, I'm staying in the Hilton Anaheim in room 14420.
