Accessing the console session on Windows Terminal Services from OS X

by kai on 23/03/2009

This is a sort of note-for-myself post. Just today I needed to use Remote Desktop to jump onto a Windows 2003 Server of a client. Only problem - all the client licenses were blocked and I couldn't get in. Out of office hours. Grrr. Solution: use the console session (session 0). By the way - can ANYONE explain me why it's called console session? I mean - where's the console? It's still a UI with…

Setting up preview for texlipse on OSX

by kai on 15/11/2008

And now for something completely different. When I'm doing writing, I usually try to use LaTeX whenever possible. If you have no idea what I'm talking about - have a look at the Wikipedia entry for LaTeX to get an overview. The 30,000 feet picture is that it's a way to produce the most beautiful electronic typesetting ever know to mankind. Anyway - Stefan and I are embarking to write a fairly…

Adobe Ambassador

by kai on 15/07/2008

Just recently, I was appointed to be one of the Adobe Ambassadors for the Pacific region - namely Australia and New Zealand. I hear you asking... "Well, what does it mean?" There's a pretty easy and nice definition: An Adobe Ambassador is a recognised industry professional whom Adobe has approached to represent them in the Pacific region. They are an expert of the Adobe tools. They understand…

Flash-based game suite on Facebook

by kai on 15/07/2008

Today I've met with Dan Milward for lunch. Dan owns a company here in Wellington (Instinct) that's pretty deep in developing a game creation engine for Flash and particularly Flash Lite games. I'm pretty impressed, it's a very nice tool and there's an online version of it available on Facebook. I personally can see a lot of use for that type of application and the games that can be created by…

Another one on i18n... the capital "ß"

by kai on 01/07/2008

When one is talking about Unicode and i18n, usually part of any discussion is the question what exactly a character is. I'll give you a typical example in German. Besides the well known "umlauts" (which are basically ä,ö,ü,Ä,Ö and Ü) there is one more character that usually causes some concern. The story behind the umlauts is that those are what's called makrons - "normal" characters with a…

(Un-)ethical clients? Opinions wanted!

by kai on 28/03/2008

Something to think about for you guys. How do you deal with inquiries or clients that do not really stand highly regarded in your political or ethical views? It's really hard for me to provide an example avoiding to step onto someones's toes - but obviously there are a few things that each individual around might not like. Let's say if I was a supporter of NZ's Labour party - would I take a Flex…

Buzzword and Safari 3.1

by kai on 27/03/2008

Just went into Buzzword with Safari 3.1 for the first time. It's officially an unsupported browser and therefore it now triggers the "unsupported browser" page whenever I'm accessing a document - arrgs... I have the feeling it's not a technical issue as everything seems to work fine after I've clicked my way through, it's probably more of a legal statement because Buzzword hasn't been fully tested for Safari 3.1...

BVDW guidelines for good usability (in German)

by kai on 25/03/2008

The BVDW (Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft) in Germany has recently published a guidelines and recommendation document on usability. I came across it because Dirk Rosenbaum, one of the former directors of msg at.net (where I used to work back in Germany as a software architect from 2001-2005), was one of the main editors of the publication. It turned out to be a well done overview on usability…

Organisations still don't get it: Social networking and social sites are reality

by kai on 24/03/2008

Sigh... just recently I've learned about another organisation not seeing the reality of social sites actually being useful. The story is a quick one - I've invited someone I know to dopplr. In case you don't know it - it's a site for (business) travellers to keep track of where your colleagues, friends etc. are, to get information on recommended hotels and other places (recommendations from…

PDF on its way to become an ISO standard

by kai on 06/12/2007

This one is interesting: Jim King's inside pdf reports on the fact that PDF 1.7 passed the ballot to become the ISO 32000 (DIS) standard by a vote of 13:1. That's a very good result and will hopefully contribute to the acceptance of PDF document in governments and also when it comes to web standards. The whole ISO process hasn't been completed yet. There are a few 100 comments the working group…
