Displaying PDF documents/forms from Adobe LiveCycle in the browser

by kai on 28/11/2013

Users of Adobe LiveCycle quite regularly interact with PDF documents. Some examples are: Rendering customised documents for print purposes Creating PDF forms for on- and offline use to collect data for further processing Rendering pre-filled PDF forms to send out to customers/users for completion and physical signature etc. In a lot of cases those PDF documents are what's called an XFA-based…

Accessing .properties files within a Livecycle ES/ADEP DSC

by kai on 12/08/2012

The other day Darren asked about how to access a properties file with some settings from within a Livecycle ES resp. ADEP DSC on the livecycle developers mailing list. I responded there, but I thought it'd be useful to post the solution here as well. Essentially a Livecycle/ADEP DSC is nothing else but a .jar file that's been crafted in a certain way. Darren wanted to have the .properties file…

Debugging Livecycle Data Services in Livecycle ES

by kai on 10/08/2012

The other day I was spending some time with a client of mine who ran into an issue with a Flex Remoting endpoint in Livecycle/ADEP Essentially what happened was that within an object tree supposed to be sent from the Flex application to a Livecycle endpoint contained a lot of unexpected null references. Monitoring the AMF remoting traffic with Charles showed however that the data was serialised…

Extending Adobe LiveCycle through custom DSCs - some resources

by kai on 25/02/2012

Don't worry - this is not going to be a lengthy, complicated, super-advanced tutorial. I thought about writing a post on Adobe LC DSCs for a while, but never got round to. Today, I got kind of pushed over the edge by seeing that my friend Duane and his partner Matt from Überity have published a super-simple DSC to integrate an LC process with the Twilio SMS/TXT services. You have no idea what I'm…

Unhandled exception in FormDesigner.exe - Excuse me?

by kai on 16/04/2010

This is just a heads-up / note to myself / note to everyone else on a weird issue I had today with LiveCycle Designer ES 8.2. I wanted to use an installation on a Win XP SP 2 VM (typical training or "I just need to quickly edit a form" setup for me). Said installation always worked fine and I never had any issues with it before. Firing it up today left me ending up with an "unhandled expection in…

Accessible PDF documents and forms

by kai on 20/01/2010

Yes, to a lot of people's surprise PDF documents can be authored (and made afterwards) accessible. The keywords here are avoiding scanned paper documents (although OCR can do quite a lot) and in particular making use of tagging and reading order. A very good overview is provided by the Social Security Administration in the US. Although not everything in there is applicable in non-US countries due…

Hightlighted borders in LiveCycle Designer

by kai on 24/11/2008

I came across a slightly weird issue the other day when building forms in LiveCycle Designer. LC forms offer the nice and simple feature of being able to create form elements that render highlighted in Reader or Acrobat Pro when mandatory. For whatever reason I had a few form elements in which the form element itself rendered highlighted but also the larger box comprising the element's…
